Book Details

Author/Editor Name Justine Larbalestier
Publication Year 209
Publisher Allen & Unwin
ISBN 9781741758726

Secrets, lies, murder and betrayal.
Micah Wilkins is a liar. But when her boyfriend, Zach, dies under brutal circumstances, the shock might be enough to set her straight. Or maybe not. Especially when lying comes as naturally to her as breathing. Was Micah dating Zach? Did they kiss? Did she see him the night he died? And is she really hiding a family secret? Where does the actual truth lie?
Liar is a breathtaking roller-coaster read that will have you up all night, desperately seeking for something true.

Micah knows wrong and right, but can't help her compulsive lying. She loves biology (true), her boyfriend is called Zach (well, sort of), Zach is murdered (true) and she doesn't have a broken heart (lie). Micah makes her own world much more interesting and convoluted than it really is, or does she? What is her family really like? What really happened to Zach? Who is Micah?

Larbalestier sucks you in like a black hole of brilliant writing. The whole narrative style feels completely unique, leaving much up to the reader to decide what they want to believe. Never before have you had such an unreliable narrator. Is this scene real? Is this dialogue between characters made up? Is it true? Micah isn't the one who is confused. She just lies – a lot. Everyone lies, but none like Micah. Simple - but not to the reader.

Yet another thing to fall in love with about Liar is the structure of the book. It's not linear; it's more like someone who is remembering events and then going off course with when this happened or explaining who this is. It's a much entwined story, but easy for the reader to follow (with headers like “Before”, “After”, “Family History” etc). Story and style flow together beautifully, inextricable.

Such an incredible book - such a mind-blowing and awesome read - cannot be missed by anyone. In creating a novel that should be studied at universities (as well as for making an utterly pleasurable read), Larbalestier presents something that cannot be narrowed down by boundaries like gender or genre. It's not quite crime; it's not 'just for girls'.
Dare to trust in this: you will not regret it. After all, no one really knows the “truth”.
