The council organises three popular, nationwide writing competitions annually: Youth Writes, Martha Richardson Poetry Medal, and Southern Cross Literary Competition. Meet: Fourth Tuesday evening each month.
Currently has 13 members. Members set themselves writing tasks, which they collectively review. Their first anthology was printed in September 2004. Members also share their own projects for group criticism and appraisal. As funds permit, guest authors are invited to inspire and the group also organises an annual workshop for the community. The group has a fortnightly space in the local newspaper to air their writing.

The group began as a romance writing group but have branched off into other areas, and would, in fact, be willing to take on up to three new members.
